"We were surprised and disappointed that the County of Maui rushed to court even before completing its own investigation," Hawaiian Electric CEO Shelee Kimura said in a statement Sunday. The small fire near the downed poles spread into a field near Lahaina Intermediate School. The Maui County Fire Department responded to the morning fire and declared it had been extinguished, according to the company's account of events leading up to the wildfires. Hawaiian Electric said the power had been off for hours when the crew witnessed that second fire in the field.

Maui County sued Hawaiian Electric last week, accusing the utility of negligently failing to shut off power and causing the devastating fires that destroyed the coastal town of Lahaina and killed more than 114 people. "We were surprised and disappointed that the County of Maui rushed to court even before completing its own investigation," CEO Shelee Kimura said in a statement. Even with Monday's rally, shares are still down more than 60% since the wildfires started on Aug. 8. "To the extent HECO (Hawaiian Electric Co) has information of a second ignition source, HECO should offer that evidence now.

A general view shows damage in the fire ravaged town of Lahaina on the island of Maui in Hawaii, U.S., August 15, 2023. Maui County on Thursday sued Hawaiian Electric for damages over the deadly wildfires that have claimed more than100 lives and resulted in billions of dollars in estimated property losses. Hawaiian Electric's stock fell 6% in extended trading on news of the lawsuit. Maui County's attorneys said Hawaiian Electric inexcusably left its powerlines energized despite a warning from the National Weather Service that high winds from Hurricane Dora and drought conditions created a high fire risk. The wildfires reduced the historic town of Lahaina to ruins in the deadliest blazes in the U.S. in more than a century and the worst disaster in Hawaii state history.

Aug 22 (Reuters) - Hawaiian Electric Industries (HE.N) said on Tuesday it was seeking advice from boutique advisory firm Guggenheim Securities, after questions were raised over the utility's role in the Maui wildfires. "We are seeking advice from various experts as we position HEI and Hawaiian Electric to be the strong, financially healthy local utility that the people of Maui and Hawai‘i need over the long term," the company said. Shares of Hawaiian Electric, which were down 2.4% at the open, reversed course, and were up 1.3% at $13.21 in afternoon trading. Fitch on Monday downgraded Hawaiian Electric's credit rating to junk status, becoming the third ratings agency to flag risks associated with the utility's potential exposure to liabilities related to the wildfire. Fitch said potential liabilities could be above $3.8 billion, which represents an "existential threat" to the company.

Homes damaged by fire are seen in Lahaina on the island of Maui in Hawaii, U.S., August 14, 2023. The company said in its filing that shutting off power was not part of its high-wind management protocol. Analysts have said Hawaiian's situation is reminiscent of that of PG&E Corp (PCG.N) and wildfires in California. PG&E filed for bankruptcy protection in 2019, and subsequently restructured, citing potential liabilities exceeding $30 billion stemming from California wildfires that were blamed on its equipment. As of Thursday, about 1,900 customers in West Maui remained without electricity, Hawaiian said.

Whether mandatory return-to-office policies will make the climate crisis worse is an important question, especially as scientists predict that 2023 will be the hottest year on record. But determining whether working from an office is worse for the planet isn't that simple. Failing to find a balance between boosting productivity at the office and protecting the planet risks making the crisis worse. Even though the study only covered the early part of the pandemic, it illustrated how a shift away from office work can have some positive effects for the planet. "There was no clear answer to whether work from home was better or worse for the environment in general terms."

The Club's industrials are set to profit from a burgeoning trend of companies bringing manufacturing jobs back to the U.S. from overseas. As companies reconstruct supply chains in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, Mizuho analysts see a multiyear revenue benefit for Western industrials. REUTERS/Samuel Rajkumar/File PhotoJune 22 (Reuters) - General Electric's (GE.N) aerospace unit said on Thursday it has signed an agreement with India's state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HIAE.NS) to make fighter jet engines for the Indian Air Force. The agreement includes the potential joint production of GE Aerospace's F414 engines in India and the engines will be used to power Tejas fighter jets, GE said. Reuters reported in May the Biden administration was poised to sign off on a deal that would allow GE to produce jet engines powering Indian military aircraft. GE first began working with Hindustan Aeronautics and the Aeronautical Development Agency in 1986 to support the development of India's light combat aircraft with F404 engines.

This spike bodes well for the IPO market, bankers say, because both new listings and secondary stock sales rely on strong demand from equity investors. "Historically, follow-on activity of this magnitude should lead to animal spirits in the IPO market," said Daniel Burton-Morgan, head of Americas syndicate for equity capital markets at Bank of America Corp (BAC.N). The IPO market has been in the doldrums since the start of 2022, when Russia's invasion of Ukraine and a spike in inflation fueled a bout of market volatility as investors fretted over U.S. interest rate hikes. The week of June 5 saw 19 follow-on and secondary stock sales in the United States, totaling proceeds of $6.6 billion, one of the highest weekly tallies since the end of 2021. IPO HOPEFULSMajor companies are waiting in the wings to launch their market debut come September, when the IPO window traditionally opens after a summer lull.

Our four industrial-focused stocks — Caterpillar (CAT), Emerson Electric (EMR), Honeywell (HON) and Linde (LIN) — have all been gaining steam over the past three months. There are positive short-term catalysts for our industrial holdings including the U.S. government's commitment to infrastructure spending, global decarbonization initiatives, and industrial automation. For all these reasons, Jim said EMR stock has been "stuck in the mud." EMR stock also pays a healthy 2.5% annual dividend yield and is a real dividend aristocrat. GE Healthcare (GEHC) shares are sliding Thursday, giving Club members an opportunity to invest in the medical-technology company at an increasingly attractive valuation. The noise around this transaction seems to be dragging down GE Healthcare shares. Thursday's declines push GE Healthcare shares below our cost basis of $79.47, which typically is a welcome development for a newer, smaller position. Essentially, what's happening now is General Electric is exchanging more than a quarter of its GEHC shares in a deal with Morgan Stanley. So, it's hardly a surprise to see General Electric monetizing some of its GE Healthcare stake to improve its balance sheet.
